What are our winter trips like?

Ski resorts

We travel in small groups to the Austrian Alps, to the Ski amadé region, where a single ski pass gives you access to around 760 km of slopes. Our favorite destinations are Wagrain, Flachau, Zauchensee, Schladming, St. Johann/Alpendorf and the Gastein Valley. We try to visit a different resort each day to make the trip as varied as possible. We spend six full days on the slopes.

The journey

We leave Riga on Friday evening. The journey takes approximately 19–20 hours, and we arrive at the apartments in Wagrain around midday on Saturday. From Sunday to Friday, we have six full days in the mountains. Each morning, we take a minibus to the chosen resort and return to the apartments at the end of the day. On Friday evening, we pack our bags, and early on Saturday morning, around 4:30–5:00 a.m., we head home. We usually arrive in Riga late on Saturday evening.

Accommodation

We stay in fully equipped apartments in Wagrain, about a five-minute drive from the nearest ski lifts and 300 meters from a ski bus stop. The apartments have a kitchen, two toilets and showers, as well as a heated room with ski boot dryers. We prepare our own meals, often together, agreeing on the menu and sharing the tasks.

Trip costs

€550 / €650 – minibus travel from Riga to Austria and back, all local transfers to ski resorts and shops and back to the apartments, transport of equipment, and accommodation in fully equipped apartments in Wagrain.

Ski pass – extra, approximately €207–414 depending on age and purchase conditions. Better prices may be available when purchased online in advance.

You should also budget for food, drinks, meals at mountain restaurants, personal purchases and travel insurance.

Safety and assistance

We strongly urge every participant to purchase travel insurance that covers skiing or snowboarding and, if necessary, mountain rescue costs.

If an unexpected situation arises on the slopes, we help contact rescue services and medical facilities and arrange transport back to the apartments. It's important to us that no group member is left without support in a difficult situation.

Frequently asked questions about our winter trips

How much luggage can I bring?

Each person can bring one suitcase with personal belongings, as well as skis or a snowboard, boots and a helmet.

Boots and a helmet do not need to go in the suitcase and should be packed separately. There is enough space for them in the minibus. If you rent equipment, it is usually more economical to do so in Latvia and bring it with you. Equipment can also be rented in the Ski amadé region. If you choose this option, contact us and we will recommend a suitable solution.

How will we get to our destination?

We will travel in an 8-seater minibus and bring all the luggage with us. We leave on Friday evening at around 5:00–6:00 p.m. We will agree individually where and how you will join the trip.

We arrive at our destination on Saturday at around 1:00 p.m. Along the way, we plan several short stops at petrol stations to stretch our legs, have a coffee and use the facilities. There will also be a longer breakfast stop on Saturday morning.

On the return journey, we leave early, at around 5:00 a.m., and arrive in Riga at around 7:00 a.m. the following morning.

If you do not want to travel the entire way by minibus, you can choose to fly to Vienna. We will transport your equipment, meet you at Vienna Airport, take you to the resort and bring you back to the airport after the trip. You must purchase the flight tickets yourself, and this option does not reduce the trip price.

Do I need to bring food?

Food prices in Austria are approximately the same as in Latvia. During the trip, we will go to a shop several times to buy food, but you are of course welcome to bring your favourite products with you.

The guesthouses are equipped with kitchens and everything needed for cooking, so we usually prepare breakfast and dinner ourselves. There are many mountain restaurants for lunch, as well as restaurants and cafés in the villages near the mountain and our accommodation.

Where will we stay?

We will stay in fully equipped apartments in a guesthouse in the village of Wagrain, approximately a five-minute drive from the nearest ski lifts and 300 metres from a ski bus stop.

The apartments have a kitchen, two toilets and showers, as well as a heated room with ski boot dryers. We prepare our own meals, often together, agreeing on the menu and sharing the tasks.

The apartments have five bedrooms: two twin rooms, two single rooms and one room for four people, as well as a spacious kitchen with a living area. The guesthouse has a warm room for drying equipment and mountain clothing, as well as boot-drying facilities.

How will we organise the day and get to and from the slopes?

We travel together, but those who prefer to plan their day individually can do so. We usually leave for the slopes at around 8:00 a.m. so that we can start the active part of the day at 8:30 a.m., when the lifts open.

The slopes are usually in their best condition in the morning, so it is definitely worth making the most of them. We leave the slopes at around 2:00–4:00 p.m., depending on the weather, slope conditions and everyone’s preferences. We usually agree on this each day. The last lift runs at 4:30 p.m.

If someone wants to go to the slopes later or return earlier or later, this is easy to arrange using the ski buses that run past both guesthouses.

What else can you do in the Ski amadé region?

If six days on the slopes feels like too much, there are other activities in the area:

  • Cross-country skiing: several prepared trails are available at the foot of the mountains. Cross-country skis can be rented locally.
  • Tobogganing: one of the resorts has an excellent toboggan run that is popular with both children and adults.
  • Snowshoe hikes: local activity providers offer mountain hikes with the necessary equipment provided for group participants.
  • Swimming pool and sauna: once during the trip, we usually visit a warm-water pool and sauna complex.

If you would like to bring cross-country skis or other additional equipment, please let us know in advance so that we can plan the total amount of luggage.
